Philosophy 4 Children

Philosophy for Children encourages children to think critically, caringly, creatively and collaboratively.  Children are given a stimulus and then work together to create their own philosophical question, focusing on big ideas such as: justice, love, courage, friendship, change, and difference. Sometimes children are asked to explore a particular question arising from a class topic or when engaging in a whole school enquiry.

Apart from the sheer enjoyment of dialogue, the benefits are endless:

  • Pupil voice
  • Self confidence
  • Making connections
  • Language, speaking and listening – dialogue
  • Respect , empathy and tolerance – values
  • Personal development – considering others view, changing their views – shaping them as caring individuals – developing moral compass – compassion
  • Relationships
  • Resilience
  • Reflection
  • Extension and understanding-challenge
  • Reasoning, questioning, thinking

P4C has a positive impact across the curriculum and sits perfectly with our whole school ethos.
