Important Information   

PE will be on Monday afternoon and Friday afternoon. Please make sure your child has their PE kit in school on those days and still wears uniform in the mornings. 

Reading logs and reading books: Please bring these into school everyday. We will use the reading logs to make a note of homework as well as keep a track of your child’s home reading and homework

Homework will both be set on Tuesdays and will be due in on the following Monday. Usually it will be an activity to practise spelling and / or grammar and a sheet to practise Maths. Please let us know if your child is struggling to complete the homework within a reasonable time and we can support you. 

A new spelling rule to learn will be taught on Mondays. The children are taught a spelling rule each week, as well as being given time to practise words from the statutory curriculum lists. We will check their progress in memorising these spellings and rules every 3-4 weeks. Children will stick the list of spellings into their log each week.

Times tables: We continue to encourage fluency in timestables and mental arithmetic as the foundation for Mathematics in Year 5. Children are still able to practise at home on Timestable Rockstars. Children will know the specific timestable they are working towards completing in class during “mad minute maths”.

Reading: Children in Year 5 should be reading daily at home. Even though most children can now read independently, we’d also encourage you to enjoy hearing your child read and to continue to read to them – sharing ideas and thoughts about the text. Children can choose to read a book from the classroom, the library, or from home.  For great (and up-to-date) book recommendations, we recommend visiting “The Book Trust” website; visiting you local library; or talking to other children and parents and recommending and loaning favourites! 

Equipment: Children are welcome to bring stationery for their learning pencil cases (pencil, blue pen, glue stick, rubber etc). We will provide pencil cases for them, and stationery for those who haven’t brought it in from home. All items will be labelled.  Children may like to bring in other colouring pens and pencils  – we will insist that these are kept keep in the school bags for creative tasks and free time.  

Ideas for home learning in other subjects  

Topic: This term we are learning about the Aztecs and Chocolate (Fair-trade). Have a look around the shops at what items are now fairtrade. Please also collect chocolate wrappers for our art project!

Science: We will be studying properties of materials. Play with different materials to experiment how waterproof they are!
