Upper Woodford Class - Year 5
Mrs McNee, Mrs Oldham and Mrs Toze

Important Information

PE will be on Monday afternoon and Tuesday afternoonPlease make sure your child has their PE kit in school on those days.

Reading logs and reading books: Please bring these into school everyday. We will use the reading logs to make a note of homework as well as keep a track of your child’s home reading.

Literacy and Maths Homework will both be set on Tuesday and will be due in on the following MondayUsually it will be a page in a CGP book, an online activity, or a sheet. Please let us know if your child is struggling to complete the homework within a reasonable time and we can support you.

A new spelling rule to learn will be taught on Fridays. The children are taught a spelling rule each week, as well as being given time to practise words from the statutory curriculum lists. Spelling homework is set each week to help learn these new rules.

Spelling Revision: So that we don’t forget words and rules we’ve learnt in previous years we’ll be revising a lot of spellings this year. Keep an eye out in children’s logs for words they’ve accidentally spelt incorrectly that week.

Times tables: Please continue to practise your times tables and mental arithmetic at home. You can do this through playing traditional games and methods, or using an app such as Timestable Rockstars.

Reading: Children in Year 5 should be reading daily at home. Even though most children can now read independently, we’d also encourage you to enjoy hearing your child read and to continue to read to them – sharing ideas and thoughts about the text. Children can choose to read a book from the classroom, the library, or from home.

Book recommendations: For great (and up-to-date) book recommendations, we recommend visiting “The Book Trust” website; visiting you local library; or talking to other children and parents and recommending and loaning favourites!

Equipment: We do not require children to bring in their own stationery in Year 5. We will provide them with what they need. If they have a blue pen that they would prefer to write with then they are welcome to add that to their school pencil case. Some children may like to bring in other pens  – we will insist that these are kept keep in the school bags for creative tasks and free time.

Ideas for home learning in other subjects

History: This term we are studying The Romans. Could you create your own model of a Roman Shield or helmet? Could you learn some latin words or phrases?

Science: We will be studying Space and then Forces. Please see the “moon phases” homework that will be sent out soon.

Music: Practise your musical instrument and why not compose some of your own music!
